Spokesperson's Remarks on the Accusation of China by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom
2004/05/14

Q: Recently, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom released its 2004 annual report, accusing religious policies of countries including China. What's your comment?

A: The so-called United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) once again released its annual report, groundlessly accusing the religious policies of China and other developing countries. The part involving China, which is based on hearsay, willfully attacks China's policies on religion and ethnic groups. It's totally unreasonable and only shows the organization's ignorance and prejudice.

China protects the freedom of its citizens to believe in religion according to law, and the Chinese people enjoy extensive freedom of religious belief. This is obvious to all. The US Commission interferes in China's internal affairs and undermines Sino-US relations in the name of religious freedom. It is unpopular and doomed to failure.

We call on the USCIRF to investigate problems in the United States itself, stop defaming other countries in the name of religion, so as to avoid damaging its own reputation and meeting opposition from peoples of the world.
