BRI's contribution to the world from past to future

This year marks the 8th anniversary of the inception of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). What has the BRI achieved over the past eight years? What’s the new vision for the BRI’s future? And how will the cooperation of BRI in new areas conducted? President Xi Jinping’s speech at the third symposium on the development of the BRI points the way.

What has the BRI achieved over the past eight years?

Eight years on, a total of 172 countries and international organizations have signed more than 200 cooperation agreements with China on the joint construction of the initiative. From the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor, from the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway to the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway, the BRI has brought to the populations of the countries along the Belt and Road tangible benefits through the various specific measures.

China has invested nearly $ 140 billion in participating countries, and in which Chinese companies have created 330,000 jobs. Furthermore, in the first 10 months of 2021 both the number of trains of the China-Europe Railway Express and the volume of goods carried on board exceeded the quantities reached in 2020, achieving double growth in trains and freight.

What’s the new vision for the BRI’s future?

BRI will aim for high-standard, sustainable and beneficial to public well-being, and China should "actively respond to challenges, utilise advantages and avoid disadvantages." This is consistent with the vision elaborated in the historical resolution that was adopted at the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In other words, BRI will pragmatically continue to evolve with the times.

China will continue expanding cooperation in three-party or multiparty markets and conduct more cooperation on production capacity, and participation by multilateral development agencies and financial institutions from developed nations should be encouraged. China will continue to do its best to help nations participating in the BRI to fight the pandemic.

How will the cooperation of BRI in new areas conducted?

To expand the cooperation areas of the BRI, there will be steady steps to conduct cooperation in new areas such as health, green development, digitalization and innovation.

- Green development: In supporting the green transition of developing nations, China will promote information sharing and capacity building in green and low-carbon development and to deepen ecology, environment and climate governance cooperation.

- Digitalization: China will develop Silk Road e-commerce and formulate a pattern for digital cooperation, and the international cooperation in intellectual property rights protection will be scaled up.

- Innovation: China will carry out the BRI Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Action Plan, strengthen international cooperation on intellectual property protection and create an open, fair, just and non-discriminatory environment for scientific and technological development.
