Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Remarks on US Permission for Lu Hsiu-lien's "Transit Stop" in Its Territory
2004/05/28

Q: US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher confirmed recently that Lu Hsiu-lien will make a "transit stop" in the US en route to Central Latin America. What comment does China have on this?

A: Facts have proved that the "transit stop" in the United States requested by the Taiwan Authorities is nothing more than an excuse to cover their real attempts to split China and undermine China-US relations.

The United States, regardless of China's representations, granted permission to Lu, which violated the principles set forth in the three Sino-US joint communiqués, sent a wrong signal to the "pro-independence" elements in Taiwan, and brought about negative impact on China-US ties. We are firmly opposed to it.

We strongly urge the US side to recognize the harmful result of this issue, honor its commitments to adhere to the one-China policy, abide by the three Sino-US joint communiqués and oppose "Taiwan independence", and stop official exchanges with Taiwan in any form, so as to prevent China-US relations from being undermined.
